"Outside a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside a dog, it's too dark to read." --Groucho Marx
JERRY JARRELL, Librarian
I have been employed at North Lamar ISD since 1991 when I was hired as a 7th and 8th grade Language Arts instructor. Over the years I have been the middle school yearbook advisor, an academic team leader, and a sponsor for various clubs and UIL events. Because I have always enjoyed reading, I jumped at the opportunity to become the middle school librarian in 1997 when the campus was relocated from Bailey to Stone. In addition to my library duties, I currently serve as the campus webpage coordinator, technology representative, and I am the faculty liaison at PTO meetings.
Originally from Cooper, Texas, I moved my family to Lamar County in 2000. My wife Frankie teaches Family & Consumer Science at North Lamar High School, and I am proud to say both our sons are Eagle Scouts and graduates of NLHS. Ryan, our oldest, teaches Math at Greenville High School. Our youngest son, Bennett, works at James Hodge Motors and spends his free time helping friends work on their vehicles.
As an avid reader, I hope I can instill a love of books and reading among all our students and staff. To paraphrase the writer Mark Twain, a person who chooses NOT to read is no better off than a person who CAN'T read, so it is my goal to help others find reading material that they are interested in. I sincerely hope others will think of me as the campus 'go-to guy' when they need assistance.
When I'm not working at school, I am often busy at home reading books and reviewing them online for my Shelfari account ( www.shelfari.com/o1518164577 ). Many of the books I read and review are from our very own SMS library! My goal this year is to read 100 books. Last year I read over 60, so wish me luck!  In additon to my Shelfari account, I also have an online book blog where I review a variety of books I've read. It cannot be accessed from school, but if anyone wants to check it out, here's the address:  lithography101.blogspot.com . I hope you'll take time to look over one or both of these sites and leave me a comment.
