When your child gets stuck on a word have him/her...
- Think about the story.
- Think about a word that would make sense.
- Reread the sentence or paragraph.
- Look for chunks in words such as diagraphs; th, ch, and sh and vowel diagraphs; ee, ea, oo, ai.
- Break the word apart at the syllable.
- Make an analogy...Do you know a word that looks similar to this word?
Reinforce comprehension by asking questions about what your child has read.
