When your child gets stuck on a word have him/her...
- Think about the story.
- Think about a word that would make sense.
- Reread the sentence or paragraph.
- Look for chunks in words such as: diagraphs th, sh, and th and vowel diagraphs ee, ea, oo, ai, etc.
- Break the word apart at the syllable.
- Make an analogy...Do you know a word that looks similar to this word?
Reinforce comprehension by asking questions about what your child has read.
